What the National Day 2026 holiday does to a box order in October

TL;DR

  • China's 2026 National Day holiday runs 1–7 October, with Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October set as working days in the State Council notice published on 4 November 2025. Our die-cutting, wrapping and insert lines stop for those seven days.
  • The week either side of the break is slower than the break itself: haulage fills up before it and customs queues build when it reopens. Customs authorities publish their own clearing arrangements for the window, so a clearance day inside it has to be booked, not assumed.
  • Sampling takes 7 days, mass production 15 days from artwork and die approval, and a quotation holds for 7 days. A box that has to sail in October is decided before the break, not during it.

If your purchase order lands in the National Day week, the calendar decides more of the schedule than the artwork does. This page sets out the 2026 holiday dates, what physically stops in Xiamen, and the five details we need before a die is cut for an October shipment.

The 2026 National Day dates, and what they stop

The State Council's notice on the 2026 public holidays (guobanfamingdian No. 7 of 2025, published 4 November 2025) sets National Day at 1–7 October 2026 and designates Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October as working days. We take those dates from the gov.cn notice rather than from a shipping blog, because that notice is the document the calendar actually follows.

What stops is physical. The corrugator and the die-cutting line, the wrapping tables where a rigid box gets its printed sheet glued down, insert cutting, and most of the trucking between our gate in Xiamen and the terminals. Staff availability in the days either side of the break is thinner than usual even when the lines are nominally open.

What does not stop is the sailing schedule. Vessels leave on their fixed rotation whether the factory is open or not, which is why a holiday that lasts seven days can move a delivery date by three or four weeks: you miss the sailing, you wait for the next one, and the next one is full because everyone else missed the same sailing.

Customs authorities publish their own clearing arrangements for the same window. Pingshan Customs in the Shenzhen district posted its 2026 National Day notice on 22 September 2026, setting out which desks stay open through the holiday and how overtime clearing is booked — the notice is on the customs site here. If your clearance day falls between 1 and 7 October, treat it as a day that has to be booked with a person attached to it.

One thing the national notice does not tell you is our shutdown plan. A supplier's arrangement can differ from the statutory one, so ask for ours in writing with the order and put it in the purchase order file next to the delivery date.

What the break does to a 15-day run

We count mass production from the day the artwork and the die are approved, not from the enquiry. A seven-day national holiday that falls inside those 15 days is not production time, and the run shifts by however many days the lines are closed plus the day or two it takes the first shift back to clear the queue that built up in front of them.

Sampling carries the same dependency. On a rigid box the sample is where the magnet position, the ribbon pull and the wrap direction are fixed. Move a magnet a few millimetres after the die exists and you are buying a second sample and a second 7 days, and by then you are standing on the far side of the holiday with everyone else's order in front of yours.

Our practical rule for October programmes: artwork and die approval before 20 September for any box that has to sail in the first half of October, and before the break for anything that has to reach a shelf in November.

The boxes we run for October shipments

Most of the October calendar with us is Q4 retail and gifting work. Magnetic flip boxes, drawer boxes and lid-and-base trays from the special gift box range, straight magnetic boxes, folding cake boxes with a window and handle from the cake box, sushi box and sandwich box range, and transit work in fanfold corrugated cardboard where the box is protection rather than a shelf piece.

When we wrap a rigid box, the printed sheet is laminated first, matt or gloss, and then glued onto the paperboard. On a design with one large dark solid we push customers toward matt lamination with a spot UV rather than a gloss film. Gloss shows every scuff the box collects in a container, and by the time the lid reaches a shelf it looks handled; matt hides it and the spot UV still puts the mark where the logo sits.

On the folding side, a carton with a PVC or PET window is die-cut, creased, glued and windowed on the same line, which is why a folding box usually beats a rigid box on both unit cost and freight weight when the box is a carrier rather than a keepsake. That is a decision to make before the sample, not after it.

When an October deadline is the wrong order to place

There are two cases where we tell buyers to spend their money elsewhere.

The first is a date rather than a box. If the goods have to be in your hands in the first week of November and the artwork is not approved yet, the constraint is no longer our lead time; it is the port queue after 8 October. A stock folding carton or an existing tool you already own beats a new custom die in that situation, and moving a promotion by two weeks usually costs less than the air freight needed to rescue a missed shelf date.

The second is a rigid gift box that goes straight into a courier mailer. A wrapped rigid shell protects corners from handling, not from a drop onto concrete, and the outer carton has to exist either way. If the end buyer never keeps the box, the money is better spent on board grade in the shipper.

What to send before the break

Five things decide whether an October order moves: the three inner dimensions in millimetres, the weight and footprint of the contents, artwork as a vector file with fonts outlined, whether inserts are needed and what sits in each cavity, and the quantity with the destination port and the date the goods must be in hand. Send those and we can sample, quote and put the run in the queue before the lines close.

Our note on the September Mid-Autumn window covers the smaller holiday that sits in front of this one, and the festival packaging blog collects the rest of the seasonal work.

What buyers ask us about the October holiday

Does the factory close for the whole National Day week?
The statutory holiday is 1–7 October and our production lines stop for it. We confirm the exact shutdown and restart dates in writing with each order, because a supplier's own arrangement can differ from the national one.

Can you still send me a quotation during the holiday?
The office is thin rather than empty and a quote is still issued, but the 7-day validity runs from the date we send it, so a quotation sent on 1 October is largely spent by the time the lines restart.

How long does a custom box take after the holiday?
Sampling 7 days, mass production 15 days from artwork and die approval. Those clocks do not run during the break, so an approval taken on 30 September starts counting on 8 October.

What is the MOQ on a gift box?
It differs by structure, size and print run, so we confirm the number on the drawing rather than publishing one figure for the whole catalogue. Send the dimensions and the quantity goes into the quote.

Will my container still make the October sailing?
It depends on the booking rather than on us. If the boxes are finished before the break, we book the haulage ahead of it; if they finish after 8 October, you are competing for space on the first sailings with every other exporter whose cargo slipped the same week.

Do you work from a photo of the product?
No. Take the three inner dimensions in millimetres and the weight, because a cavity has to clear the item by hand, not by eye, and a photo cannot give us either number.

The lead times, the quotation validity and the 20 September planning cut-off above are our standing terms, confirmed internally on 22 September 2026. The box constructions are the ones published in our own collection pages.
